Keys to correctly select your fireplace

In Lacunza, we have a vast network of distributors to keep us close wherever you may be. They will help you in your purchase to ensure you get the product you need for your home. In any case, certain aspects should be taken into account before contacting your closest distributor so that you know what you really want and need.

Power

To obtain a satisfactory experience with your wood burning stove or fireplace, the first basic step is for it to be the right size and offer adequate power. If you've never had a wood burning stove or fireplace, it’s difficult to know the power you will need to heat your home. At Lacunza, we have you in mind. So, we have a Power Calculator that you can use to avoid making strange calculations or assumptions.

Ventilation and insulation

Air supply to your home or wood burning stove is important to ensure it works correctly. If your house if very well insulated or has mechanical ventilation systems or extractor hoods, there may be operational problems (exhaust blow-back, for example). In this case, we recommend that you choose a “sealed unit” that allows air supply required for combustion to be protected from the exterior, which will completely prevent such incidents. In Lacunza you will find a large number and variety of options.
Insulation is another factor to keep in mind. If your home is not well insulated, it will require more heat. In any case, if your home has good insulation it will require an exterior air supply.

Exhaust

An incorrectly sized exhaust vent is the reason behind malfunctioning in many homes or wood burning stoves. You can consult this subject in the installation manuals, but it can be summarised as follows:

  • Follow the machine’s exhaust diameter.
  • Use adequate ducts (solid fuels)
  • Straight ducts or maximum 45º elbows (nothing at 90º)
  • They must surpass the roof’s height by 1 metre
  • Line working fireplaces (brick, stone, refractory...)

Where do I put it?

You probably know where you want to put your wood burning stove or fireplace but it’s not always the recommended place. You should take the surrounding materials into consideration, for example, close by materials that are sensitive to heat. In the instruction manuals, we explain safety distances to avoid problems. In addition, our distributor will be able to give you further information that you need on this topic.

Installation

In Spain, it is common for people to ask an acquaintance or family member to install a wood burning stove, ignoring the fact that poor installation is the reason behind most problems that come up later on. For that reason, Lacunza recommends that you hire a professional recommended by our distributor to perform the complete installation.

Change out an old one

If, on the other hand, you already have a wood burning stove or fireplace and you don’t know how to change it out for a new Lacunza, take a photo and some measurements of your old unit to one of our distributors and they will assist you in assessing the price to make the switch.

What do I have to know to get it right with a wood burning stove?

When buying a wood burning stove sometimes you may not know what some of the information means and this can lead to the wrong product being purchased. For example, you may choose the wrong power and end up overheating your house or generating more energy consumption through the stove than necessary. If you buy a wood stove with very high power, it will consume more wood than necessary. If, on the contrary, the power is not enough the wood stove would have to work at its maximum capacity for a long time.

Power output

The market for wood burning stoves offers many power output levels. Domestic installations are usually less than 70kW, but the correct choice will depend on the use you are going to give to your stove.
The power range of domestic boilers is usually 4kW and up. As a guideline, you can calculate that 1kW can heat approximately 10 square meters. So, a house of about 100 square meters would need a 10kW wood stove. But there are more variables that influence the decision regarding power output such as your home’s insulation, the area in which you live, etc.

Insulation level

The level of insulation directly influences the power needed to heat your home. Bad insulation due to the façade, partitions, windows etc. will make you need more power since some of the heat leaves your home through there. The area where your house is located will also exercise influence. Owing to this, estimates of power output must also take this factor into account.

Energy efficiency

Energy efficiency means that no energy is lost from the heat produced through combustion, making the wood stove that much more efficient. The higher the efficiency of the stove (a 70-85% yield is usually obtained), the greater the use of heat there will be, meaning your appliance is not only more efficient but provides you savings.

A value that measures emissions of carbon monoxide, an odourless, colourless, tasteless, toxic and highly flammable gas.

Conto Térmico
An Italian regulation that encourages interventions to increase energy efficiency and thermal energy production from renewable sources for small installations.
Convection
It is called convection when heat is transmitted and creates natural air circulation in any room.
D
Damper
Rotating cover that allows the passage of air/smoke through a pipe to be opened/closed
Deflector
A device used to divert the direction of the smoke flow before leaving the duct
Double Combustion
Technology whereby the gas from the firewood’s initial combustion is burned again. It provides greater efficiency and life for your firewood with lower consumption.
Double sided
These are fireplaces or wood burning stoves that have glass on the front and back of the fireplace in order to see the fire and get heat from both sides.
Ducting
Channelling of air through ducts
E
